8. A Family Portrait

One afternoon in February 2015, I remember calling mom from my apartment. That day I had not been able to visit because I was occupied cleaning, so I had called mom to see how she was doing. After several exchanges of various conversations, mom asked me to take her to Walmart the next day. Initially, I thought she just needed to buy a few things for the house or get some clothes. In reality, mom had a bucket list request: she wanted to meet Ricky Martin.

Naturally, when mom asked me to take her to Walmart to meet Ricky I was completely confused. I was so occupied in my own things during the week that I had not heard the radio announcements of Ricky’s in-store appearance signing autographs to his latest album release. For a moment, I thought mom was delirious, but when she explained it to me I ended up freaking out in excitement (being a Ricky fan myself) and told her I would definitely take her.

The day arrives for us to go see Ricky at Walmart, so we prepared for the long lines by bringing some snacks and wearing comfortable shoes. Going to Walmart is typically an entire chaotic experience on a regular day, so the day of  the in-store album signing was no exception. Mom, my sister and I went together to stand in line and meet Ricky Martin — we have been his fans our entire lives so you can imagine how excited we were the entire time. Once we got through the massive line to enter the parking lot, we went inside and immediately began searching the area where the event was to be taking place and bought our CD’s in order to get the wristbands.

Overall, we ended up waiting about 2 hours in line just to get to meet Ricky Martin, but it was well worth the wait. The experience is one a kind and you enjoy standing in line with other fans. People sang, danced and often spread jokes while waiting, but you can also feel the excitement in the air especially when Ricky finally arrived into the store. Once mom, my sister and I turned the last corner into the section where the stage was set and we could actually see Ricky from a distance our excitement was elevated and we began to take pictures with our phones.

When we finally got the chance to walk up on stage and greet Ricky, mom was the first one to hug him and give him kisses; she was the most happiest that day. Mom exchanged some quick words with Ricky and told him that she was a fighting cancer to which he provided some words of encouragement. I was overjoyed to have the opportunity to meet him and finally get a picture together. Ricky’s staff members were taking pictures of the fans with him, so I was blessed to get a wonderful family portrait:
